Romaine/Cos
|
Romaine leaves are striking and sweet tasting with a nutty flavour. The natural blanching of the romaine leaves from green to yellow make it extremely attractive. Romaine is a conical shaped lettuce with dark green outer leaves and sweet crisp inner leaves and has the highest levels of nutrients and vitamins found in lettuce.
Romaine is one of the oldest lettuce types linking back to Ancient Greece and Rome. There are ancient Egyptian tomb paintings of the plant. It is disputed as to whether its name comes from the Greek island of Cos or the Arabic name word for lettuce. “Romaine” is derived from when the Roman armies moved throughout Europe.
It is most well known for being the original lettuce base to the Caesar Salad, again linking back to ancient times.
